If you have been using your current installation of Windows XP for sometime (like 3months???) then there’s quite a chance that your system has become progressively slow and unresponsive. This is because of all the software that you have installed or spyware you have accumulated and it can also be due to all those unnecessary files piled up on your hard drive. You can improve the speed of XP without having to reinstall the OS itself and for that there are just a few quick steps you can take.
1- Do a complete system scan
This is by far the most basic protective step you can take to ensure your system stays out of trouble. Make a habit of doing regular system scan with your preferred antivirus or if you tend to forget about your system’s health while you are busy harvesting your crops on Farmville then I suggest you schedule system scan on your antivirus (I think all antivirus solutions offer this). You can use free as well as paid programs. I use freewares and AVG and AVIRA and my personal favorites.
2- Stay away from spyware
So many websites are a source of spyware. If you aren’t minding your (or your family’s) whereabouts on the internet then you’re sure to land on some spyware website sooner or later. Therefore a good antispy should be on guard at all times. Ad-Aware is a good option.
3- Clean up your drives
We all keep saving a lot of information on our drives without giving much thought to whether we’ll ever look through the stuff again or not. Your system can become really slow specially if the hard drive gets all the junk. So my advice to you
- Never save your data on your C:\ drive (or any other drive where your operating system is installed) there are two benefits of doing this.
- your documents/music/photos etc do not eat up your storage,
- incase your OS gets corrupted or you need to format your drive, your data remains intact.
- Keep going through your folders to remove unnecessary or not-needed-anymore type of files (I know this is useful because I keep forgetting to clean up my folder which results in me spending hours getting rid of junk).
If you perform the above 3 things on a regular basis then you’d be doing a great favor to 3 people..yourself, your cousin (or friend) who always fixes your system and the lastly the operating system itself!
